Lexington, Kentucky, police have arrested a second adult in a child-abuse case involving two young children who were hospitalized in July after reportedly eating hemp-infused gummies, WKYT reported on Oct. 15.

According to police, the children, ages 3 and 4, were hospitalized after eating about 20 gummies from a container of 25. WKYT reported in July that the children's mother told police she had opened the new container, taken one gummy and gone to sleep, and that she likely left the container on a bathroom sink within the children's reach. Police said an ambulance was not called until hours after the children had not regained consciousness. The mother was arrested in July and charged with two counts of second-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 or under.

Police said the mother has since accused her husband of leaving the gummies in an unsecured location. He was arrested on July 26 on an unrelated warrant, which led to both adults' phones being confiscated. Authorities said a search of the phones under a warrant showed him accepting fault for the incident, and also showed the mother at least knew the children had eaten the gummies. He was arrested on Oct. 14 and is facing charges related to child abuse, according to officials.

Authorities said his arrest does not change the criminal abuse charges the mother faces over the time allegedly taken to seek medical care. Both adults are accused, not convicted, and the reports did not list any pleas.
