The New Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced S.B. 4635, a bill designed to ensure state law remains consistent with federal hemp definitions. The legislation allows for automatic adjustments to state regulations whenever federal changes take effect, providing a buffer against potential federal delays.

Under the proposed bill, businesses licensed by the state’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control or the Cannabis Regulatory Commission would be permitted to continue selling hemp products until the federal definitional changes are fully implemented. This aims to provide regulatory clarity for industry participants.

Simultaneously, the state is considering S.B. 4287, which targets unlicensed cannabis operators. This bill seeks to impose significant financial penalties, ranging from $100,000 to $250,000, on entities involved in the illicit sale and distribution of cannabis products.

These legislative efforts reflect New Jersey's broader strategy to manage the transition of the hemp market while cracking down on unregulated commercial activity. Stakeholders are advised to monitor the progress of these bills as the December 11 federal deadline approaches.
